Reconciling modernity: Chinese Architecture 1914 – 2014

For the 14th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, Chief Curator Rem Koolhaas proposes“Fundamentals” as the overall title and “Absorbing Modernity 1914–2014” as the theme of all national pavilions; the Chinese Pavilion, curated by Jiang Jun, interprets it as “Reconciling Modernity”, on the one hand to emphasize the conflicts that once went almost ideologicalized, on the other hand to show the capacity of Chinese civilization in dissolving or even assimilating the external impacts from a broader historical view.

Reflecting on the curating the pavilion and their own practices, curator Jiang Jun and participating architects Lu Xiang and Li Hu will come to talk about the evolution and modernization of Chinese architecture in the past century. On what fundamental modernity may has been absorbed and reconciled? How we define “Chinese” architecture in the contemporary, global context?
